Early Life

Like Father, like son ...

At an early age Martin lived with his grandparents in York Township, Medina, Ohio
and rode a kidwagon (like this one) to school

In 1927 Martin moved into this house at 421 N. Harmony Street in Medina
(the monthly payment was $30 and electricity did not reach the house until 1936)

How Martin Survived the Great Depression

• Martin Sr. fixed motorcycles and people would pay
in trade; one fellow traded a winter supply of potatoes

• Helped his father and brothers pick up dropped coal along the railroad

• Picked blackberries on grandfather's farm and sold them
for 10 cents a quart

• Martin and brother Al peddled the "Shopping News" in Medina
(delivered 250-300 papers for the sum of 85 cents)

• Weeded gardens at a nursery at $1 for 10 hours work

• Mowed lawns, shoveled snow, garden work
