Notes for George HUTCHINS

George Hutchins, a retired agriculturist of Paulding county, Ohio, first saw the light near Sittingbourn, Kent county, England, on the 14th day of November, 1821. His parents, who were James and Mary (Swan) Hutchins, both died in England. After acquiring his education in his native land, George Hutchins, in 1851, came to America and located in Cuyahoga county, Ohio, thence in 1853 to Paulding county, when he located on the farm where he now resides. It was at that time nothing but a dense forest and he could hear the wolves at night, while deer, bear, turkeys and pheasants were very plentiful. From this wilderness he has obtained a fine farm of one hundred ninety-five and a half acres of land where, in the evening of life, he is surrounded by his family and friends, and enjoys the esteem of the community. His marriage to Miss Sarah Chester, who was born March 8, 1814, took place December 10, 1853. They adopted their nephew, Albert, son of Charles and Elizabeth (Spendle) Hutchins, his birth having occurred October 6, 1859. His nephew's eldest child, Elizabeth by name, and born April 16, 1881, has resided with Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins since she was nine months of age, her father taking care of the farm on which our subject lives. George Hutchins in politics votes the republican ticket, while the Methodist church holds the religious creed of the family. They enjoy the confidence of their fellow-townsmen.1

George and his family can be found in the following census records: 1860, Crane Tp, Paulding Co, OH, p 138; 1870, Crane Tp, Paulding Co, OH, p 496; 1880, Crane Tp, Paulding Co, OH p 502 (ED 122, p 11, line 27; 1900, Crane Tp, Paulding Co, OH, ED 47, Sheet 5; 1910, Census of Crane Tp, Paulding Co, OH ED 53, Family Nbr 141.

18 v. Mary (1867-1939)

Notes for Stephen S HUTCHINS

Stephen Hutchin brought his bride, Dorcas Winch, from Kent, England to Rockort in 1850. (Note: 7 April 1851 according to the ship Manifest.L.V.) They settled on a farm near Madison Avenue, and built a sturdy frame house, still standing in 1949, at 2060 Warren Road. Mr. Hutchin was interested in public affairs, especially the schools. He served on the school board as member and president for many years. Mrs. Hutchin deplored the lack of religious instruction, and with the help of the Webb family raised funds for building the first Lakewood Methodist Church. She was often referred to as the "mother of the church". They had four sons and one daughter, Will, Fred, Charles, George and Mary. Mrs. Hutchin died in 1880 when Mary was only thirteen. Assuming the responsibilities of mother of the family at such an early age made her self-reliant. She kept a diary at the age of fourteen which gives an interesting picture of life for a young girl at that time. Jan. 1, 1881. After dinner at Mr. Parsons we had nuts and candy and then went coasting at Patchin's hill. Oh! I think it is a splendid hill! Charlie went to get Gusta Bacher and her brothers to sing German songs for us. They stayed to supper, and then we played games such as "Spat them Out", "Letters in the Post Office", and something like "Pussy Wants a Corner." Jan. 13, School day--not so good in my studies after vacation. Today's moral: Whene'er a task is set to you, don't idle sit and view it, nor be content to wish it done; begin at once to do it. Jan. 15--Saturday again, baking, sweeping, making beds and other things. Got through for a while, sat down and read "Robinson Crusoe". Jan 16--Sunday--went to church and played the organ. Mr. Warner preached. Jan. 22--Another Saturday; how the weeks fly! "So time takes his flight and the years roll on and we shall soon find ourselves (boys and girls) men and women." Mary Hutching was Lakewood High's first graduate in 1885. Three years later she married the new superintendent of schools, Charles J. Weeks, who had come from Madison, Ohio. Mrs. Weeks' daughter, Helen Campbell, is a teacher in one of Lakewood's Schools today (1949). Charles Hutchin's daughter, Elsie, was at one time deputy director of finance for the City of Lakewood. His son, Ferm, is Superintendent of Buildings and grounds at Western Reserve University, and Charles himself was custodian of Harrison, Madison and Roosevelt schools. Stephen Hutchin would undoubtedly be pleased to know that his interest in school and civic affairs carried over to his grandchildren. Three Webb brothers Archer, John and Daniel...joined with the Hutchin family in the building of the Lakewood Methodist Church at Summit. Daniel Webb was called the pillar of the church. At the request of Mrs. Hutchin he became the first contributor, giving $500, which was then equalled by his brother John and Mr. Hutchin. LAKEWOOD METHODIST CHURCH. No new churches appeared along Detroit Avenue until 1876 when the Hutchins and Webb families purchased a lot at the corner of Detroit and Summit and raised funds for the erection of the first Methodist Church, an attractive one-room frame church with a bell in the tower.29

STORIES OF LAKEWOOD PIONEERS. Stephen Hutchins came here from England the year following his marriage, 1850. Mrs. Hutchins was the Mother of the M. E. Church at Summit Ave.; a Granddaughter is a City Official.

It is surprising when one goes over the list of the old settlers of Lakewood to find so many of English birth who have prospered and become good citizens. And yet when one stops to think about it he realizes that when the first permanent settler of East Rockport, James Nicholson, built his log cabin on the Detroit trail, in 1812, only 36 years had elapsed since the Declaration of Independence which entitled anyone to differentiate between an English subject and an American.

To the already long list of young English settlers must be added Stephen S. Hutchins who married Dorcas Winch in Kent, England, in the fall of 1849 and on the following spring voyaged to these shores on a sailing craft and settled with his young bride in which is now a part of Lakewood, that section through which ran the old Indian trail, now the pretentious thoroughfare closely lined with fine homes and equipped with all the ultra-requirements of those days, known as Warren road.

There was quite a large clearing in the woods at that time to the east of "the trail" but to the west was dense wood of the original forest, 200 acres of which belonged to the estate of Adam Wagar.

Mr. Hutchins was a fine type of study rosy faced young Englishman. He prospered and raised a family of four boys and two girls of whom Mr. C. A. Hutchins, for a long time chief custodian of the local schools, and Mrs. C. J. Weeks live in Lakewood today.

Mr. Hutchins always took an interest in public affairs about which he never hesitated to express his views in no uncertain terms. The only public office which he ever held was that of member of the Board of Education of which he was president nine of the twelve years of service

The Hutchinses has always been prominent in the activities of the Methodist church which--now located in a splendid structure at the corner of Detroit and Summit avenues--boasts a bigger membership than any other church in the State of Ohio--at latest accounts numbering about 2500.

In a recent talk with Mr. Daniel Webb Mrs. Hutchins was given the credit of being the "mother of the church"--if one might use that expression. She was the prime mover toward getting subscriptions for the original edifice that was erected on the lot where the present mammoth stone structure stands today. The home of this congregation in the pioneer days was a small frame structure that stood at the corner of the Hog's Back road (now euphoniously known as Hilliard avenue) and Warren road.

When the proposition came up of going in so deep as to pay $1,200 for the Detroit street lot and erecting the original modest frame church, Mrs. Hutchins took a leading part. She went first to Mr. Webb and said to him if he would subscribe she would get "Steve," as she called her husband, to donate a similar amount. Mr. Webb gave $500 and according to agreement, Stephen Hutchins also gave $500, a tremendous amount for those days. Those were the times of the old fashioned "revivals," where sinners were wont to see the evil of their ways in an emotional fashion. Some scoffers say that such religious enthusiasm cannot last, but it would be possible, if it were not desirable to avoid personalities, to point to families in Lakewood who have remained firm in the faith of Methodism who were converted at "revivals" at Berea a half century ago, when Lakewood (then East Rockport) was a far scattered community of a few hundred and Berea was quite a town for that time.

Mrs. Hutchins died in the summer of 1880 and her husband survived her 35 years, dying at the age of 89 in 1915.

Probably the most prominent woman in public office in Cuyahoga county today is Miss Elsie Hutchins, granddaughter of the sturdy pioneers and daughter of Mr. C. A. Hutchins. She holds the office of Deputy Director of Finance, the City of Lakewood, a position requiring ability and training and is doing the work in a most satisfactory way. She learned the ropes from that able executive, the late Mayor Cook, who was himself an expert accountant and college man.

It is an open secret that Mr. C. A. Hutchins is very proud of his daughter and so are the citizens of Lakewood. The late Thomas Hall, of the prominent pioneer family for many years justice of the peace, once told in a story of the old times in which he and Charles Hutchins played leading rolls which showed that the "old boys" of today were not much different then from the "young boys" of today. The third party shall be nameless, for certain reasons.

The party of the third part was the school bully. He loved to tease, hector and cuff about the smaller boys, and in fact any of them who were of a pacifist nature. It was likewise a fact that pretty near every boy who attended the ancient Warren road "skule" house was afraid of the bully. Tom and Charlie were the objects of amusement for the "Third Party" on the day in question. He (the "T. P.") would first cuff one and then the other, affording amusement to himself and others tagging alone, for he was withal a droll fellow.

But at last Charles' "English" was roused and he hissed to Tom. "Let's jump him!" And like one man they did so as soon as said and they gave the bully such a drubbing as he never forgot.

"But," said Tom many years after, "Charlie and I always kept together after that when he (the "T. P.) was around."30

Stephen and Emma arrived at the Port of NY 7 April 1851, on the ship Devonshire.31

On 16 April 1864 Stephen bought land (probably about 10 acres) in Rockport Township (now Lakewood), Cuyahoga Co., OH, for $800.32

Stephen was naturalized in Cleveland 1 April 1873.33

Stephen and his family can be found in the following Census Records: 1860 Rockport, Cuyahoga Co, OH, p 5; 1870 Rockport, Cuyahoga Co, OH, p 71; 1880 Rockport, Cuyahoga Co, OH, p 322A; 1900 Census, Rockport, Cuyahoga Co, OH, ED 220, S 27, L 88. 1910 Census, Cuyahoga Co, OH, ED 39, Fam 49.

Notes for Dorcas Emma WINCH

Rockport: Buried in Alger Cemetery, Lakewood, Cuyahoga Co, Oh. Dorcas Emma, 24 Sep 1880. She was in poor health for several years. She was taken sick with malarial fever about four weeks ago, but was apparently better when she was taken with hemorrhage of the stomach, which was the immediate cause of her death. Saturday morning a post mortem examination was made by Dr. Hobson, which disclosed the fact that her stomach was very badly ulcerated and she would not have lived but a few months if the hemorrhage had not taken place.10

11. Francis HUTCHINS.

12. Charles HUTCHINS.

Charles married Elizabeth SPENDLE.

They had one child:

19 i. Albert (1859-1934)

Notes for Charles HUTCHINS

In the 1860 census, Margaretta Tp, Erie Co, OH, there is a Charles and Anna with an unnamed male 8 months old, born in OH. This may be Charles, brother of George, who married Elizabeth Spindle. Their son, Albert, was born 6 Oct 1859. Charles may have married twice or Elizabeth may have also used the name Anna. Apparently Charles and his wife died as Albert was adopted by his Uncle George.

Fourth Generation

13. William HUTCHINS. William died on 25 Apr 1873 in Paulding, OH, US. Buried in Riverside Cem. in Antwerp Tp, Paulding, OH, US.4

Notes about William HUTCHINS.

There is a child, William Hutchins, living with George and Sarah HUTCHINS in the 1860 and 1870 census records in Paulding County, Ohio. The relationship is not given. According to the census records he was born in 1852 in England. On his tombstone in a Paulding County Cemetery his death is recorded as April 25, 1873. George and Sarah were not married until December, 1853. George may have been previously married. In Cuyahoga County there is a record of a death for William Hutchins on April 25, 1873, age 22.11 (Because the death date is the same it would seem that this is William Hutchins from Paulding County. LV)

14. William HUTCHINS. Born in Mar 1852 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga, OH, US.

Notes about William HUTCHINS.

This William Hutchins appears to be the son of Stephen S. and Dorcas Emma HUTCHINS. In the 1860 census record in Rockport, Cuyahoga County, Ohio there is a child, William Hutchins, living with Stephen and Dorcas. The relationship is not given. He cannot be found in the 1870 census. Being 18 years old he may be boarding with another family, possibly in another state. He is not listed on Stephen and Dorcas's tombstone as is George who died unmarried at the age of 23. This would seem to indicate he did not die young. There is the death of William Hutchins in Cuyahoga County on April 25, 1873, but that is most likely the son of George and Sarah as it would be very unusual for both of them to have died on the same date. In the Lakewood History by Butler Stephen and Dorcas are said to have 4 sons and 1 daughter. The oldest son listed is Will. On 24 Oct. 1895 there is a marriage of William Hutchins to Theresa Vanera in Cuyahoga County. They are listed in the 1900 and 1910 census records in Cleveland Township (east side). The age and birthplace of the parents match. He was a photographer. One son, William, was born August 1896. No death record has been found. This may have been the son of Stephen, but I don't have enough proof to list him as such. L.V.

Notes for Mary HUTCHINS

IT ALL BEGAN WITH MARY.

With stately step and downcast eyes, the "graduating class" moved down the aisle to the small platform from which East Rockport's High School Class of 1885 was to receive its diploma. Dr. Sook, a man prominent in all civic affairs, headed the procession, followed by other notables come to grace the auspicious event.

In all the glory of her 18 years, charming in her creamy dress with its long, tight sleeve and high neck, the "graduating class" moved forward to deliver her oration and received her coveted diploma. Thus did Mary Hutchins, sole member of the Class of '85, pass on into the ranks of that great majority--the alumni.

In 1882, Mary Hutchins had entered the local school to enroll as a student in the new three-year high school course that was being offered as an experiment. The little red school house that had housed the one high school room, the primary room, the meeting room, was now peaceful and ivy-covered. School "records" were now kept there and school executives convened there.

Heating in those days was not a problem of so many boilers and so many pounds of steam, but of securing the seat closest to the stove. The lucky one who sat in that envied position slowly roasted, while the ones farther removed suffered all the rigors of an Arctic winter.

Lakewood in those days was an unimportant suburb of Rockport, or Rocky River, as it was later called. Its name on the maps, if it appeared at all, was East Rockport. It was called this because it was always believed that the rush of development would center about Rocky River township, rather than reach out from the small city of Cleveland.

In 1888, three years after the graduation of Mary Hutchins, a new superintendent came to take charge of the school now belonging to Lakewood hamlet. The new man, Charles W. Weeks, shortly after arriving in the hamlet, wooed and won Mary Hutchins, the first graduate of the school...

(1914)...And I remember that I took botany that fascinated me! And I took ancient history with Mr. Weeks. He was blind in one eye and wore a glass eye...and he could see but very little out of the other. That's why the foolishness went on in his room, because the poor blind man couldn't see! I remember one time they set off an alarm clock that was placed too high for him to reach. And it just rang and rang and rang 'til he finally knocked it off with a cane and threw it out in the hall...barely missing the principal of the school...
